On the Right Side of History

 Copyright © 2023 PJ Stassen

▌INTRODUCTION. Who does not want to be on the ‘right side of history’? The question is, how can we know the ‘right side of history’? The Bible gives ample pointers, for instance:

| The Righteous vs. the Wicked.  The Bible makes a clear distinction between the Righteous and the Wicked

"For the arms of the wicked shall be broken; but Jehovah upholds the righteous … The hope of the righteous is gladness; but the hope of the wicked shall perish … When the righteous increase, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people mourn.”
[Psalm37:17; Proverbs10:28; 29:2MKJV].

| The Fear of the LORD vs. Evil. The Bible equates the fear of the LORD with wisdom and knowledge:

“And to man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom! And to depart from evil is understanding! … “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
[Job28:28; Proverbs1:7MKJV].

|  Light vs. Darkness. When contemplating all the government corruption, state capture and fraud among prominent politicians and business-people, one wonders what has happened to the moral fabric of our society and the time-tested Judeo-Christian values so cherished by people (even by atheists!) during more prosperous times. Jesus Christ has explained the reason for it lucidly:

“And this is the condemnation, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil … For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed … But he who practices truth comes to the Light so that his works may be revealed, that they exist, having been worked in God.”
[John3:19-21MKJV].

| Wheat vs. Tares. Often people may wonder why the evil are not removed from society more expeditiously, or more effectively. The point is that men often are imperfect judges of character and may do the wrong thing.  Again, Jesus Christ explains by using the parable of the unsuspecting farmer:

“But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way … But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.”
[Matthew13:25, 29-30KJV].

THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT. History is scheduled to ‘one day’ culminate in (what the Bible refers to as) the Great White Throne Judgment. Wrote John, the ‘beloved disciple’, in exile on the Isle Patmos on the future of the righteous and the wicked:

“… After these things I looked, and lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of all nations and kin-dreds and people and tongues, stood before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palms in their hands … And I saw a great white throne, and Him sitting on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And a place was not found for them … And death and hell were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death. And if anyone was not found having been written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the Lake of Fire … But the fearful, and the unbelieving, and the abo-minable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorce-rers, and idolaters, and all liars, will have their part in the Lake burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
[Revelation4:7:9; 20:11,14,15; 21:8MKJV]

THE VALLEY OF DECISIONThe day Jesus Christ was crucified He was joined on the hill of Calvary (Golgotha) by two ‘evildoers’ who were also being crucified on either side of Him; whereas the one evildoer was mocking Jesus from his side of the middle cross, the other one chose to show compassion. That feeble gesture of compassion prompted Jesus to react with an emphatic:

“Today thou shalt be with me in paradise.”
[Luke23:39-MKJV].

Why? Because that evildoer had wisely chosen, after years of devotion to alife of crime, for once in his life to be on the right side of history.
Are you on the right side of history?

Beware the Postmodernists Trying to Postmodernize Your Church!

 Copyright © 2022 PJ Stassen

All Rights Reserved

█ INTRODUCTION. Do you have the Trojan Horse of ‘postmodernism’ threatening your church? Are liberal-minded, often extreme, leftist postmodernists, trying to (through courts of law, litigation etc.) pressurise your Church to adjust your Church doctrine, creed and articles of faith in the name of ‘progress’? It could possibly, for instance, happen in various ways:

▶ Politically. This is where churches are being hijacked by political parties to accommodate politicians in their rabble rousing speeches during (political) electioneering campaigns. In Parliament (RSA), churches and evangelists are banned from reading and quoting the Bible  and preaching the Gospel officially in the parliamentary precinct in terms of the ‘separation of church and secular state’ principle.
However, come electioneering time, politicians armed with all kinds of good sounding promises (some authentic, some not) will descend en masse on churches in a 'mad scramble on Africa' to get re-elected for another term, the ‘separation of church and state’ principle suddenly having evaporated like fog in the sun.
This should not be allowed by Evangelical churches, except where meeting halls are common property (public domain) type precincts to be anyway used by all and sundry at will. Spiritual leaders and pastors should do their utmost to keep politicians the heck out of bona fide Evangelical churches; what the other churches (including mainline 'state' churches) do is their prerogative and problem.

▶ Commercially. This is where entrepreneurs, businessmen and women (many of them dishonest ‘snake-oil’ salespeople) insinuate themselves into the leadership with promises of lucrative rewards, financial benefits, commissions and kickbacks for the congregation in exchange for them to be allowed to make presentations in churches to market their products in terms of the convenient ‘captured audience’ principle riding on the backs of ‘recommendations’ from their pastors.
Profligate pastors who allow this kind of commercial exploitation of gullible Church members should be given notice and dismissed on the condition that it is contractually provided for in the congregation’s ‘Conditions of Employment’ agreements for leaders; be fair, respect the country's labour legislation, protocols and principles.

  ▶ Philosophically.
This is where all kinds of ‘motivational speakers’ etc. are being invited to speak to congregants from pulpits about topics alien to church doctrine (like lectures on the ‘positive benefits’ of Atheism, Agnosticism, Freethought, Humanism, Religious Syncretism etc.) with the 'noble' (suspect, nefarious)  aim to help congregants ‘broaden their horizons’.
Ask yourself: Would the Apostle Paul have allowed King Herod or some pagan, Canaanite idol-worshipper to come and make speeches from his Church pulpits on the benefits of worshipping ‘Diana of Ephesus’?
Who anyway can offer broader horizons than those offered by Jesus Christ Himself through His Gospel of Salvation? Never dine with the devil in the name of 'progress'.

▶ Theologically. This is where the values of movements such as Jesus Seminar (USA)Nuwe Hervormers (RSA), CRT, the World Transformation Movement, Scientology, Evolution, Freemasonry, Spiritualism, New Age Freethought , Secular Humanism, Woke Theology, Critical Race Theory, etc. are being imported in terms of the phenomenon of religious syncretism into churches in the name of ‘tolerance’ and 'mutual understanding'.
It is fascinating how doctrines from cults like these are sometimes so amicably tolerated by wellmeaning but naive Christians while, at the same time, these same Christians, who had suddenly become 'enlightened', will, in their own churches, cast all kinds of aspersions on the persona, ministry, teachings and relevance of Jesus Christ for today's society.

█ THE WAY FORWARD. When, during the Middle Ages,. Christians from the Catholic Church began to revolt against their Church, they eventually, through protests by Reformation figures, developed into the Protestant Reformation movement, giving rise to the Inquisition and the widespread harassment and persecution of Protestants.
My forebears have, for instance, had to escape the Catholic persecution in the 18th century by fleeing from the picturesque village of Heimbach (Germany) to South Africa and, during the last 130 years or so when some Pentecostalist Christians became disenchanted with the traditional Reformed Movement and all hopes of change were dashed, it gave rise to the worldwide Pentecostal Movement, which in turn has led to the founding of the Charismatic Movement.
I would thus be unethical, inconsiderate and selfish for anyone from these ‘alternative, progressive, postmodernist movements’ to expect the traditional churches to conform to their ways of thinking and behaving and using courts of law to force them, against traditional Church doctrine, to ‘modernise’ in the name of ‘progress’.
The solution is for such ‘alternative’, ‘progressive’ movements would be to do the honourable thing and do what Protestants, Pentecostals and Charismatics have been doing successfully for centuries or decades, i.e., to stop harassing the established Churches trying to piggyback on their infrastructure and start their own movements, build their own Churches and write their own catechisms to accommodate their peculiar creeds; this would be the honourable thing for them to do.

ISRAEL: The Christian's Duty Toward Israel

 Copyright © 2022 PJ Stassen

All Rights Reserved

▐ MAINTAIN GOOD RELATIONS WITH ISRAEL. Christians are not called to support the notorious, anti-Jewish, anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist, anti-Israel BDS movement but to support Israel, a small ‘David-nation’ surrounded by hundreds of millions of ‘Goliaths’ inside a block of antagonistic, belligerent nations who want to deny Israel the right to existence and statehood by ‘driving it into the sea’.
Well, be that as it may, on at least three occasions (1948, 1967 and 1973) the humble slingshot of ‘David’ has proved victorious over the giant swords of the ‘Goliaths’. The (Evangelical) Christian’s duty toward Israel includes:

► Bless ISRAEL. Bless, and do not curse Israel! The Bible says:

“And I will bless those that bless you [ABRAHAM>ISAAC>JACOB>ISRAEL] and curse the one who curses you. And in you shall all families of the earth be blessed."
[Genesis12:3MKJV].

► Comfort ISRAEL. The Bible says:

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak lovingly to the heart of Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is done, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she has received of Jehovah's hand double for all her sins.”
[Isaiah40:1-2].

Pray for ISRAEL. The Bible says:

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; those who love you shall be bles-sed. Peace be within your walls, blessings within your palaces.”
[Psalm122:6-7].

Identify with ISRAEL. Identify with Israel’s right to and need for existence, recognition and statehood. Solidarity with Israel does not have to mean the rejection of the Palestinian’s cry for statehood and self-determination. Unlike the case with every other nation on earth, however, the Bible says about Israel:

“Then what is the superiority of the Jew? Or what is the profit of circumcision? Much, by every way! Chiefly, indeed, because they were entrusted with the oracles of God.”
 [Romans3:1-2].

► Support ISRAEL Theopolitically. Theologically (and Theo-politically) the case for Israel is not lost. The Bible says:

“I say then, Did they not stumble that they fall? Let it not be! But by their slipping away came salvation to the nations, to provoke them to jealousy. But if their slipping away is the riches of the world, and their default is the riches of the nations, how much more their fullness?”
[Romans 11:11-12].

Take the Gospel to ISRAEL. The people of Israel are as much candidates for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Salvation as anyone else. Contrary to what so many people think, Christianity is not for Christians alone. The Bible says:

“Speak lovingly to the heart of Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is done, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she has received of Jehovah's hand double for all her sins … For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
[Isaiah40:2; Romans1:16].

   The Bible also teaches:

“He [JEHOVAH] shall feed His flock like a shepherd; He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those with young.”
 [Isaiah40:11].

▐  JERUSALEM. It is very interesting and significant that the city of ‘Jerusalem’ is mentioned nowhere by any of its names in the Quran [Wikipedia.org] but is mentioned in the Bible (Old & New Testaments) more than 800 times
[firmisrael.org].

▐ THE PALESTINIANS. Those who support the anti-Israel, anti-Jewish, anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist 'BDS Movement' must realise that their antagonism toward Israel and Jews in general are not only aimed at the Jews and Israel only, but also aimed against Evangelical Christianity in general, as Evangelical Christians support Israel, Zionism and, as a nation, Israel’s historical right to statehood as deduced from just about every book in the Bible.
As mentioned before, however, for Holocaust deniers to say that one does not hate Jews but, in the same breath, say that Israel has no right to statehood, is as absurd as saying that, while one does not hate the Ukrainian people, the nation of Ukraine has no historical right to statehood.
Nevertheless, praying for the ‘peace of Jerusalem’ [Psalm122:6-7] without praying for the cause of the Palestinians and their aspirations will be narrowminded and disingenuous of Evangelical Christians. An amicable solution for the Middle-East’s theo-political impasse will be just as much in the interest of Israel as in the interest of the Palestinians, provided they really want it. How Biblical prophecies will yet, however, play out in the Middle-East is a matter to be eschatologically explained and does not fall within the scope of this article.

1. Inleiding. Nieuws! Openbaar Protest.

[2Samuel 22:26-27].

💢 INSISTING ON OUR HUMAN RIGHTS IS NOT MANDATORY. Exercising one's human rights is not mandatory; no government can force a citizen to exercise his/her human rights against his/her will. It is the citizen's choice to, depending on circumstations or in a particular situation, either to insist on or not to insist on his/her rights. Exercising one's human rights is an optional society choice and privilege, not a do-or-die mortal duty just because it is legal (that is, assuming when or where such are legal). Just because bungy-jumping is legal does not mean that everyone is obliged to do it.

💢'LEGAL' DOES NOT ALWAYS NECESSARILY MEAN 'FAIR'. A ‘human right’ may be legal but that does not necessarily mean it will always be fair. No citizen has the right to, e.g., stand on his/her human right to protest in public by barricading a road at the expense of another citizen’s human right to access his/her workplace to work and earn a day’s wage. Those who punish workers who refuse to strike or protest by refusing them access to their workplace are not standing on their (the strikers') human rights, they are denying other workers (non-strikers) their human rights as enshrined in the Constitution. That is called Fascism and in total confrontation with both the letter and spirit of the Constitution. Employers ought to make it their life's work to educate their employees in the spirit and letter of the Constitution and the true meaning of the concept 'human rights'.

Fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

2
a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control
early instances of army fascism and brutality                                                                                                                                          [Merriam-Webster].

💢 THE HUMAN RIGHT TO DECLINE A HUMAN RIGHT. The noblest of all human rights, i.e., the one that nobody ever talks about and few probably know about, is the human right to decline, surrender or forfeit a human right voluntarily.
Courtesy in society is as indispensable in the arenas of Politics, Culture, Business and Economics as Courtesy is indispensable for motorists in traffic. Declining, forfeiting or surrendering a human right voluntarily of one’s own volition when expedient, e.g., like giving up one’s position in a queue at the Post Office or in the Bank, or one’s seat in the bus or train to the elderly or disabled, is the oil that lubricates human relationships and the flow of the social machinery in society.
Humans are born naked, illiterate and undomesticated little savages and unless trained, educated and drilled in the rules of good neighbourliness, usually grow up 'clothed' but still (socially) illiterate savages.
Everywhere we look we see such intransigent, incorrigible citizens here and there (irrespective of socio-economic status, skin-tone, gender or political affiliation) all day long insisting on standing on their ‘human rights’, some legal and some not, e.g., the wealthy jockeying for the most lucrative directorships, corrupt politicians with their greedy, oily paws in municipal budgets and labour-union activists ‘demanding’ exorbitant wage increases (wether government or big business can afford it or not) and selfish (minimum wage driven) job protection laws that bar entry-level and homeless & unemployed from gainful employment.

💢ONLY THREE KINDS OF PEOPLE. They say there are basically only three kinds of people (not Asian, Black, Coloured & White as the government's racially driven race classification laws want to dictate) but the three kinds of 'DECENT/KIND', the 'UNDECENT*/UNKIND' and as always, the 'UNDECIDED'. The time to decide where we belong has arrived. Are we decent and kind or not?

* Not to be confused with 'Indecent'.

“Ambition often puts men upon doing the meanest offices so climbing is performed in the same posture with creeping.”

The Fear of God: Is It Really Neccesary?

 Copyright © 2022 PJ Stassen

All Rights Reserved

▌INTRODUCTION: IS THE FEAR OF GOD REALLY NECESSARY? No, if we are to listen to the Darwinists, secular humanists and postmodernist preachers of the day. These apostate movements are riding the crest of the wave in an age of free thought, self-aggrandisement, and entitlement.
So, is the fear of God still necessary? Hasn’t science and technology made God all but superfluous, redundant, and obsolete? Against such a backdrop of cultural advances in this lonely outpost of the Milky Way galaxy, is the fear of God really mandatory? Has humanity not indeed outgrown this childish notion of a Creator watching our every move, counting all the hairs on our head, and faithfully still feeding the sparrow every day?

▌WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT THE FEAR OF GOD. That ancient hero of faith, Job, in the valley of suffering, once wrote:

“And to man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom! And to depart from evil is understanding

[Job28:28MKJV].

Note that, although Job had written it, it was God (‘He’) who had said it. According to the Creator Himself, the fear of the Lord is wisdom! King Solomon has affirmed:

The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” [Proverbs1:7MKJV].

"Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days be made longer, yet surely I know that it shall be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him … Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God, and keep His commandments. For this is the whole duty of man.”

[Ecclesiastes8:12; 12:13MKJV].

   The Apostle Peter:

“Honor all. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.”

[1Peter2:17MKJV].

The Apostle John (on the Isle of Patmos) quoting the gospel-preaching angel from the Book of Revelation:

“Fear God and give glory to Him! For the hour of His judgment has come. And worship Him who made the heaven and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” [Revelation14:7MKJV].

So, is it still necessary to fear God? Is it really mandatory to fear God?

THE FUTILITY OF RELYING ON SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY TO ANSWER THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS OF LIFE. The atheist’s religion-of-choice, i.e., Evolutionism (Darwinism) as well as scientism in general, cannot even answer the most basic questions of life, e.g.:

Why is there SOMETHING instead of NOTHING?

♦ Who created the UNIVERSE?

 WHERE do we come from?

 WHY are we here?

 WHERE are we going?

♦ Is there hope for PLANET EARTH?

 Is there hope for HUMANITY?

How can we know the difference between RIGHT and WRONG?

Do we really need the flawed opinions (on such critical issues as the above) of scientists who, by their own  admission, know only about 5% of what is going in the Cosmos (with the rest, i.e., 95%, defined as ‘undetectable by scientific instruments dark matter and dark energy’), and, who, by their own admission, know only about 10%-20% of what is going in our oceans? Wrote Harvard cosmologists:

“To inquire about the nature of the very beginning, however, requires us to address why questions, the most fundamental of all being, Why is there a Universe at all? To be honest, scientists don’t know how to tackle why questions. These are outside the present fabric of modern science and probably always will be. In other words, when a ball is put in motion and Newton tells us that the ball ‘will remain in motion unless or until it is acted upon by some external force,’ we have no understanding why it does that. We do know what such balls do and also how they do it, but why we have no clue.
"No known procedure—not even the vaunted scientific method—enables us to investigate why, in the deepest sense of that word, the laws of physics and biology are as they are. We shall probably never know the answer. Nor do we know, or likely have any prospect of ever really knowing, why there is a Universe—or what might have preceded its origin.”

 [Harvard. Cosmic Evolution. Online].

THE FINAL VERDICT. The fear of God, although it is NECESSARY, is not MANDATORY, since God has created humankind in the image of God who has free will (Absolute & Infinite Free Will) so that humankind, consequently, also has free will (albeit borrowed, derivative, finite and limited free will predicated on the superior, Absolute & Infinite Free Will of God) as his/her 'default position'. Humankind's 'free will', however must not be confused with 'omnipotence'.
It would have made no philosophical sense for God to have created humankind with no other option but to mechanically obey and worship Him like a wound-up tin soldier at all times. The free will to choose light (over darkness), good (over evil), life (over death) and God (over Satan) is a privilege not enjoyed by the animal kingdom, including the primates, thus demonstrating that humankind should never be equated with primates as the Darwinists would wish us to believe. We may be Christ's sheep, but we are not stupid.
What will be mandatory (in Eternity), however, will be the consequences for not having feared and obeyed God (unbelief and disobedience) ... a thought not only too ghastly to contemplate, but also too ghastly not to contemplate. God warns:
